Review of "Detective Conan: The Million-dollar Pentagram"
The latest film in the "Detective Conan" series is creating substantial buzz in Japan, especially following its predecessor’s box office achievement of over 10 billion yen. As of April 21, news reports indicate that the current installment has already surpassed 6.5 billion yen, exceeding the pace set by the previous film.
In Japan, films that gross over 10 billion yen are considered smash hits—a status previously achieved by titles such as "Demon Slayer," "Jujutsu Kaisen," and "Your Name." Now, "Haikyuu" is on the verge of joining this elite group, and having seen this film, I am convinced that it too will earn a place among these blockbuster successes.
Why, you might ask?
The film is laden with elements that make you want to watch it repeatedly.
Character Ensemble:
The movie features a plethora of characters from previous Conan films and other titles. For those unfamiliar with some characters, such as Momiji Oooka and Soushi Okita, a pre-movie brush-up might enhance the viewing experience. It’s advisable to watch the following films before heading to the cinema:
・"Detective Conan vs. Phantom Thief Kid" (2024)
・"Detective Conan: Crossroad in the Ancient Capital" (2003)
・"Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter" (2017)
Complex Storylines:
The intricate intertwining of numerous characters and plots can make the story challenging to grasp on the first viewing.
This installment’s setting in Hakodate, Hokkaido, and historical references, such as to Hijikata Toshizo—a famous vice-commander of the Shinsengumi—require some background knowledge, especially for international viewers. The strong connection between Hijikata, Hakodate, and the Goryokaku fort adds depth, compelling many viewers to research after their first viewing and return for a second.
Romance Subplot:
A significant element of the narrative involves the relationship between Heiji and Kazuha, which evolves due to Heiji’s rivalry with Kid. The pamphlet beautifully illustrates their history, likely drawing fans of their romance to revisit the film.
Ran’s concern for them also adds a poignant touch to the storyline.
While the suspense is somewhat less pronounced compared to other entries in the series, the different tension points are likely to appeal, particularly to a female audience—women made up about 70% of the cinema-goers I observed.
Overall Review:
I found the film thoroughly engaging from the opening scene featuring Hijikata Toshizo to the very end, with no moment that allowed for distraction. This is a must-watch film in cinemas, where you can fully appreciate the detailed animation and direction that make every scene come alive.
Moreover, the pamphlet mentions, and I agree, that fans will undoubtedly flock to Hakodate for a pilgrimage to the film’s locations. As one of Japan’s premier tourist destinations, Hokkaido and particularly Hakodate, are set to be swamped with Conan fans this year. When visiting, make sure to explore Hakodate as well!
